In Plato’s Euthyphro, the central dilemma (concerning the nature of goodness) that is presented to the reader is something good just because the gods proclaim that it is good? Or do the gods deem that something is good because of some other certain quality that it has? And if so, what is that certain quality? considering this, however, Socrates discovers that they must therefore reject the second option which is the fact that the gods love something can not explain what makes the pious, pious. Mainly, this is because both statements can not both be true at the same time. If they were both considered to be true, it would create a harsh cycle with the gods loving the pious simply because they are pious, and the pious acting as pious in order to please the gods. Because of this conflict, Socrates argues that the piety of these people is not authentic. Socrates also states that the pious are not similar to those who are loved by the gods because what makes them loved by the gods is not the same as what makes the pious the pious. So, Euthyphro’s theory at most gives the reader a quality of the pious, but not the actual nature of piousness.
