“Theodore Gericault was a French painter, perhaps the most influential artist of his time. Gericault was a seminal figure of the 19th Century Romantic movement in art.” ( Encarta) “Evening: Landscape with an Aqueduct” is one of Gericault’s painting, that was finished some time in the summer of 1818 (Story Line off plaque in MOMA.) This particular painting is a typical example of other art made at this time because “the Romantics believed that God’s law could be seen written in nature.”

but for Gericault this was true, but he also understood a romantic had to go to “extraordinary lengths in trying to achieve a maximum of authenticity” (Janson, 431-36). We see this example in his own painting “Evening: Landscape with an Aqueduct,” which was part of a set of three. The other two were called “Noon: Landscape With a Roman Tomb” and “Morning: Landscape With Fisherman.” Like romantics in this era Gericault used the most important term that was being emphasized in this time, Landscape in his titles. In “Evening: Landscape with an Aqueduct” he gave attention to simplistic things like the reflection of the bridge being distorted by the water, or the sun radiating off the landscape in the orange and red colors. These techniques that were used by Gericault in heightened his work, in order to bring nature to our attention. (Ayala)
