Racism and the relationship between white Americans and African Americans has long been in issue in society. In the current time, it is an issue that is out in the open, with concepts like equality creating the impression that all people can get along without color being an issue. James Baldwin's essay titled "Notes of a Native Son" describes his personal experience of being African American and focuses on his journey to coming to understand his place in society as an African American. This begins in childhood where Baldwin describes a conflict between himself and his father, while he sees little conflict between himself and white Americans. Baldwin's father is essentially anti-white, including describing "how white people would do anything to keep a Negro down" (56).
