Exploration Of Themes In The Song Of Roland



A theme is a subject or topic of discourse or of artistic representation. In the epic The Song of Roland there are many themes displayed throughout the storyline. Some of these themes are loyalty, revenge, and the prices of war on a kingdom.
Loyalty is the quality or state of being loyal. Many characters in the epic demonstrate loyalty to another character or to their kingdom. The narrator speaks of loyalty to a religion, "The king who hates God's name, Mahound he serves, and to Apollyon prays: He'll not escape the ruin that awaits" (51). Some examples of a character's loyalty to another character are when Roland says, "Charles for his service commands me to obey"(62) and speaking of ...

they feel is just. Revenge is displayed by both feuding sides in this epic. Some quotes are "This war you've started wage on, and make no cease; to Saragossa lead your host in the field, spend all your life, if need be, in the siege, revenge the men this villain made to bleed!" when talking about the Muslims (59)and "Him has the false lord Ganelon betrayed; vast the reward the Paynim king has paid"(84) when speaking of Charles. This quote is not speaking of the physical damage of revenge but of other ways revenge can be, like changing sides in the middle of a war. Also "'Thou hast one for whom I'll make thee pay!'" (114) and "'For Roland's I think they'll dearly pay'" (166), statements made by the narrator.
