In William Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury Quentin Compson feels pride in his family’s once great past and as he obsesses over the cause of his family’s deterioration he loses sight of the meaning in of his life and commits suicide in order to protect the little meaning that he has found. Quentin watches as his family crumbles. His intelligent father has wasted his life and his sister Caddy is not pure anymore. Quentin’s father provides a constant reminder of the deterioration of Quentin’s family . Every drink pushes the family members closer to their graves. “Father will be dead in a year they say if he doesn't stop drinking and he wont stop he cant stop since I since last summer.” (Faulkner page 103). Quentin sees his family being torn apart but he can’t even cry because he is unable to find meaning in his family’s downfall. “…and then they'll send Benjy to Jackson I cant cry I cant even cry one minute.” (Faulkner page 103).
