Film Essay on Juno

For my film essay the movie I have chosen is Juno. In this essay I will express how the use of different film techniques adds meaning to the different shot scene or sequence in the movie.

Mise-en-scene and Cinematography

The first sequence out of Juno that I believe is a great example of Mise en scene is where Juno is on her way with her Dad to visit Mark and Vanessa Lorie to discuss her babies’ adoption and then have their first meeting inside the house.
First of all the setting and design of the scene is in two places, the Lories beautiful Glacial Valley Estate/house, and Juno’s beat up old van. In the establishing shots it cuts between Vanessa primping flowers in a vase, ...

after this Junos van passes by 7 or so houses on the street where the Lories live and they all look very similar in size and shape, they all look perfect and expensive, i think this is to portray the character in Juno’s personality and house. When they pull up at the Lories house it looks very similar to the other cookie cutter houses they have passed by contrast with Juno’s house and car which are both older but have a more genuine and lived-in quality.
The placement of objects in this first sequence is very deliberate and is for the viewer to distinguish between the Lorie’s house and life as opposed to Juno’s. The first prop that is used to differentiate between Juno and the Lories is her car. It is a large older model blue van which is very different to what you would normally see driving around the estate. It is also not the usual car you would see a 16 year old girl driving around in which also highlights Juno’s unusual and unique personality. The other prop which also says ...
