Flag Burning

The effort to pass a Constitutional amendment is a perfect example of democracy at work. It is the majority in America exercising their right to rule, to demonstrate who is in charge here. The Constitution gives the right to peacefully protest an action of the nation. That is what we are doing. It does not give the right to violently protest the foundation of the nation. That is what the flag burners are doing. The freedom of expression in article one of the constitution has been abused by allowing flag burning.

The flag may be the only such symbol we possess, and if we, as a community, do not have the right to preserve that symbol in a manner that expresses the responsibility and decency that are necessary for civility and popular sovereignty itself, then it is not likely that the goals for which our republic was founded will long endure.”
