“Brer Rabbit and the Tar Baby” is a tale about how Brer Fox hates Brer Rabbit because he is always giving orders out to others and being too sassy. One day he decides that he wants to find a way to get Brer Rabbit back, so he ends up making a “Tar Baby” and sticking it in the middle of the road. While hiding off in the bushes not too far from the road, Brer Rabbit comes strolling along. He stops and says hello to the baby, who did not respond back to him. Brer Rabbit asks it again and again and starts to get angry that the baby won’t answer him. Therefore, he begins to take his anger out on the Tar Baby by kicking it with his feet one by one. Many folktales are trickster tales and also contain an underdog who somehow manages to triumph over his predators. In this particular tale, Brer Rabbit is a trickster who outwits Brer Fox by his wits and not his strength. However, it is safe to say that the trickster of any story is not to be admired all the time because he shows us what to do in situations, but also what not to do. There is also a sense of competition between the two of them because it seems as if after one plays a trick or does something to the other, it starts back up again in the opposite rotation because the other feels as if he has a right to get back at them.
