But when they were caught, D.C. residents were able to breathe a little easier, knowing that they could leave their homes, go about their day, and be safe. Consequences of breaking the rules can bring freedom as well. When people break the rules, and face the consequences, then other people see that and decide that they don't want to face those same consequences, which deters people from breaking the rules.
The constitution gives us, as Americans, to have freedoms that many countries don't have and enjoy. Freedom of religion is one of those freedoms. freedom back in those days meant people were free to worship on Sunday, with certain beliefs. These people became known as Protestants, because they protested against the church of England. When a few people wanted to believe a different set of doctrines, they were kicked out of the church, left to form their own churches. But they were free to form their own churches.
When someone doesn't want to believe in a higher power at all, such as Atheists, religious freedom is thrown out the window. People do not believe that there are those who don't believe in God, and will cause trouble for them. Bible texts are thrown out to them, expecting that to reform their beliefs.
