According to the image, Global Trends in Armed Conflict the trends display that while interstate war has decreased since 1945, societal warfare and warfare totals have increased. Depicted on the graphical representation of warfare we can see a dotted line drawn vertically above the year 1991 when warfare was at its peak. The war I'm assuming was the peak of this graph was the Gulf War. The Gulf War (1990-1991) was codenamed as Operation Desert Storm and was a war waged by coalition forces from about 30 nations and was led by the United States against Iraq. The explanation of the decrease in interstate wars is a simple explanation. An example of a well known interstate war is World War II; it was states within a nation fighting each other with the help of awesome allies. During this war a huge amount of lives were lost and much too much was destroyed. At the end of this war, the world's states came to the conclusion that another interstate war would destroy the states, and with the threat of nuclear weapons involved, another war could destroy all human life.
