Friday Night Lights is an amazing book that describes everything that we have talked about in the ten weeks of this class. You have definitions of class, race, politics, community backlash, and hardships throughout the book. I had seen the movie previous to reading the book. It was years ago but I do remember it. I was amazed at how much was left out of the movie actually. I really enjoyed that the book went over the history of Odessa and Midland, and set the stage for the flow of the book.

This same pressure that is placed on this player is placed on the players of Odessa and Midland every game. There is no losing; only win. When athletics is taken away, the boys are not sure how to function without the game of football. The benefits of these guys playing football is they are treated like Gods for four months out of the years. For some of the other players who are of another ethnic group other than white, it' their one time they are treated equal regardless of race. I would say that the negatives out weight the benefits in this town. The coaches fall into this same category.

As for the education system, they do not have much of a choice when it comes to teaching the athletes. They try to make sure the students are in class on a regular basis but anything that might possibly keep a star athlete from playing in the next games is frowned upon by the community. The community is kind of like the law of the town. They are so invested in the program of football that ...
