Frost's Home Burial


Although it is unclear exactly when this poem took place, Frost
sadly describes a small burial ground outside a couple’s home and some very
serious issues that arise. It seems as though Amy and her husband have
lost a child at birth. It’s unclear exactly how much time has elapsed
since the child’s death, but I’ll assume it hasn’t been that long and
probably less than a year. Any is obviously grieving the death of her
child and her husband is grieving as well. Their lack (or fear) of
communication finds them at odds regarding any exchange of their personal
feelings. Amy and her husband have done their individual “styles” of
grieving. Amy’s is long and painful and her husband’s seems ...

conflict unravels.

It seems as though they both have been grieving the loss of their
child differently. Any feels her grieving is superior to her husband’s.
His anger emerges as he feels that she must be sadder than he is. It is
obvious at this point that they haven’t cried together and allowed
themselves to vent as a couple. It turns out that he dug the grave himself
while she watched. She seems bitter that friends could come to the grave
site, share their sympathies and then go back to their own lives. As the
poem comes to a close, their love for each other is evident as he says in
the last line, “I’ll follow and bring you back by force, I will!---”.

The conflict described seems both constructive and destructive. It
is most constructive because it forces them to face each other with their
feelings. This will cause their relationship to grow. It is a little
destructive when she shows lack of trust toward him and that is probably
