Siemens v. GE

Siemens, being a German company, is much different from GE. They make many of the same things and do many similar activities, but they also have very different financial regulations that they must follow. Tax issues and financial reporting are all affected by the different countries and their rules, but Siemens has also begun to follow American laws in order to be listed on the NYSE. Without providing the tax and other financial information that the United States government requests, Siemens would not be able to have their stock listed and traded in the United States, and the company felt that they were ready to take that step and deal with more stockholders.

United States analysts wondering if Siemens and other European companies make a lot more profit than they show, but just hide it so well that they actually avoid paying any taxes on it.
This is not specifically an accusation, but is merely an observation that has been made by many in the United States when considering that Siemens doesn't appear to make much money but yet trades much higher than a United States company with the same profit margin would trade. There is a reason for that, but Siemens has not been found to be doing anything illegal, and therefore whatever they do with their accounting practices in Germany is not the United States' business.
German accounting practices are also much more flexible than United States practices. Just like the reporting of upcoming losses but not of upcoming profits, there are other legal abilities that Siemens has in Germany and does not have in the United States.
