The science and engineering professors’ job is to educate. They are placed in the position of authority and told to educate the people. The people, are the students of the University of Rhode Island. When the school is broken down by gender I imagine that there equal if not greater numbers of females than males. But when the individual colleges are examined there are great imbalances.
Is it their fault that there are not that many females/males in there section? No. They are not to blame, but can they do something about it? Yes. effort to engage in a way that would promote women in these fields. Since I have been in college I have change my major 3 times. Most of my friends have also. So it is not the case that women have made up their mind by the time that they enter college and it can’t be changed. It may not be the individual teacher’s responsibility to encourage female scientists but the weight does fall in the college’s administrative office. The dean of these colleges should take the inceptive and start the process of encouragement.
It is possible that women see the world of science as a man’s world and that is why they are not reaching to get in. If they were shown that there have been many women scientist maybe their attitudes would change. If female students are not encouraged at a young are like they’re male counterparts then they my loose interest. If teachers at the grammar and high school level increased support then there attitudes may change.
