Genetic Engineering And DNA Technology In Agricultural Productivity - Essay

Genetic Engineering And DNA Technology In Agricultural Productivity

Due to more and more technological advances in genetic engineering, gene splicing, DNA fingerprinting, and mapping, breakthroughs in the agricultural productivity are being made. This new DNA technology allows scientists to do things such as increase food production, reduce the plant’s dependency on pesticides and other harmful chemicals, reduce costs for raw materials, improve the practices of farmers, and improve the overall quality of the environment.
One advance is the technique of DNA fingerprinting and mapping. DNA fingerprinting is the procedure of isolating DNA, using restriction enzymes to cut the DNA, and sorting the DNA so that traits and characteristics can be identified. ...

rather than relying on just the phenotypes which may actually prove to be heterozygous and can, therefore, pass on the traits which were intended to be removed.
Even the knowledge of a single gene can have a major impact. Just by locating a single pathogen-resistant trait or adding or deleting a single gene can vastly improve the overall quality and value of an organism.
One extremely important aspect of DNA technology is what has been done to protect and organism from disease. In some plants, researchers have been able to eliminate disease-causing traits found in the plasmid without harming the plants ability to move vital genetic information. Sometimes the herbicides used to kill off weeds harm the valuable crop as well, but chemical companies have been able to develop strains of wheat, cotton, and soybeans with a bacterial gene which allows the herbicides to effectively destroy the weed without hurting the real product.

The valuable parts of crop plants can be enlarged or ...
