Genetics sordaria abstract

Sordaria fimicola is made of haploid cells in a hyphae. Two haploid strains can be induced to undergo a sexual process in which they fuse to form diploid zygotes. After asgonia appears on hyphae meiosis occurs, creating haploid ascospores contained in a linear order in ascus (asci). Recombination occurs forming the tetrad product of meiosis producing eight ascorpores with different recombinants. By analyzing these spore pattens one can observe crossover events that occurred during meiosis when an allelic marker is located on each chromatid of a synapsed tetrad. Crosses were made by culturing the two strains. Incubate the plate out of direct sunlight and at room temperature for two weeks. ...

the distance between a gene and the centromere for the data to be 6.5 map units and a crossover percentage of 54%. All the data concludes that the higher the crossover percentage is, the more distance there is between a gene locus and the centromere. Overall, the data is consistent with the class data and for what is to be expected of Sordaria segregation. However, no aberrant ascopspore patterns were observed. These patterns can be common, but are not very frequent. Therefore, the acus samples were probably not large enough to observe any atypical ...
