Glass Menagerie: Relationships Are The Conveyance Of Love



A memory is a time or event in which one can remember. Memories are
not easily forgotten, yet remarkable. Tennessee Williams has created a play
in which the structure is composed of scenes through memory. These scenes
represent a crucial time in both the narrator and characters life.
Tennessee Williams uses the value of love which creates different
relationships in a family through the use of symbolism and irony to unify
The Glass Menagerie.

The Glass Menagerie consists of the value of love, which conveys
many relationships between characters of the play. There are many
differences between Tom and Amanda. Tom is a poet. He feels like he is

but she needs to appreciate him more and show
affection. Amanda doesn't want to realize that her children have different
views than her. Tom and Amanda are always arguing. To get away from his
mother, Tom tells Amanda that he goes to the movies every night and stays
out late to escape Amanda's nagging. Amanda is always telling Tom how to
eat, when to eat, what to eat, how to quit smoking, and what to read.
Amanda doesn't believe that Tom goes to the movies every night. Every time
Tom tries to make Amanda look at Laura realistically, she always ignores
him. She will never let Tom refer to Laura as crippled. By what Tom is
telling Amanda is that Laura is more than crippled because she is lonely
and only has her glass menagerie, and old records to occupy her. As usual,
Amanda will not listen to Tom. However, Amanda tells Tom that he can leave
once Laura is taken care of. Amanda needs to change her attitude and face
reality with her children before they are gone.

Menagerie, which is a memory play evoked in the mind of Tom, the son and
narrator, is carried partly in the title; for the family is like the glass
collection in the frowzy apartment, ill-adapted to it's environment"
