Ozone (O3). Highly reactive, pale-blue gas with a penetrating odor. It forms a layer in the upper atmosphere, which protects life on Earth from ultraviolet rays, a cause of skin cancer. At ground level, O3 can cause asthma attacks, stunted growth in plants, and corrosion of certain materials.

Radiosonde. A small balloon-borne instrument package equipped with a radio transmitter that measures vertical profiles (soundings) of temperature, pressure, and humidity in the atmosphere.
