One of my favorite movies of all time is Moulin Rouge. I have seen it a million times! The vast array of colorful characters is so intriguing and it is simply a good story. What I did not realize is that the setting is based on a true story and real people. I was always curious about the character called Toulouse-Lautrec played by John Leguzamo. I assumed he was a little person with an eccentric personality that added a bit of color to the story. 2009) I like the casual nature of his art. He seemed to capture the good times in regard to Montmartre and the Moulin Rouge but you can still see the underlying sadness of some of his subjects. I think that the sadness in some of his work is shown due to his honest portrayal of his subjects. For the simplistic nature of his work, he is able to make you look for a bigger meaning behind them. As I read more about Henri de Toulouse Lautrec, I learned that he lived his life to the fullest the only way he knew how but there was a tremendous amount of underlying sadness that he covered with alcohol.

Toulouse-Lautrec had a rough start in life. He was born into an aristocratic family and was the first born child of Comte Alphonse and Comtesse Adele de Toulouse-Lautrec. His father was known to be eccentric with unpredictable behaviors such as washing his socks in the river, wearing odd costumes while hunting or even disappearing for long periods of time.
