Jainism is an ancient Indian religion that focuses on peace and perfecting oneself. It started around 550BC in Eastern India, around the same time Buddhism was starting.
Jainism gets its name from the jinas, who are spiritual �conquerors� who have reached ultimate freedom and perfection. The jinas include 24 spiritual leaders called tirthankaras, or �ford-makers.� The last ford-maker's name was Mahavira, a Buddhist who became known as the founder of Jainism.

Buddhism is another ancient religion, started around 520 BC by an Indian prince named Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha. It focuses mainly on the thought that there is no soul or self, and that nothing is permanent, including life itself.
Looking more closely at Buddhism, it's shown that there are three major divisions � Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana. Each has their own interpretation of Buddhism. Theravada is atheistic, meaning it believes there is no god, whereas Mahayana believes there are many. One thing central between all of Buddhism's sects are the teachings of the Buddha, his sacred texts and Buddhist monks, or lama, as in Dalai Lama, in Tibet.
