Homosexuality

Homosexuality which derives from the ancient Greek and Latin meaning same sex has been viewed as abnormal behaviour throughout the 20[th] century to present day. The word Homosexual is a phrase that has become associated with adverse public opinion and religious prejudice. These opinions began to form theories that homosexuality was not just an alternative sexual orientation but a sickness of the mind and a disease that could be cured. This essay will identify and assess some of the methods that were carried out to cure homosexuality and outline the physical and emotional repercussions of such treatments.

In the Oxford English Dictionary, it refers to aversion therapy as being a "type of behavior therapy designed to modify undesirable or antisocial habits or addictions by creating a strong association with a disagreeable or painful stimulus" (FreeDictionary,2016). As this sexuality began to increase families started to admit their gay sons and daughters into psychiatric units in the promise that their children would be eventually cured of their sickness. It is within these units that the controversial aversion therapies would take place.

The patient would be strapped to a seat and electrodes would be placed on their hands, waist and genitals.
