How Is The Story Told in Section 111-131 of The Road?

Cormac McCarthy's `The Road' tells the story of a journey taken south by an unnamed boy and his father after an unknown catastrophe has struck the world. The story is based upon their struggle to survive as they face the rough terrain and unforgiving conditions of a new post apocalyptic America. As they proceed past rotten corpses, fire devastated landscapes, abandoned towns and houses, the father spends day by day reaffirming to the boy that they are the `good guys' who do not seek pain on others. McCarthy used descriptive language to slow down action and build tension through setting, `they stepped into a broad foyer floored in a domino of black and white marble tiles...to the left through the doorway stood a large walnut buffet in what must have been a dining room.' The descriptive setting slows action down by diverting the reader and creating an image in their head, which then in turn gradually builds tension. The descriptive setting in this section also heightens tension as it contrasts with the narrative throughout the rest of the novel; it differs from the mundane picture of the road, on which they are travelling, as normally things are described very neutrally and unemotionally by afternoon the slush had melted, off the road and by evening it was dry,'.
