The purpose of this paper is to introduce, discuss, and analyze the topic of how television transforms its subject matter. Specifically, it will discuss the statement, "What is happening in America is that television is transforming all serious public business into junk." Television is America's most pervasive medium. For example, many Americans only understanding of the War in Iraq came from what they saw on television news. When President Bush appeared on the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln and said the war was over, they believed him, and so the consequent loss of American life in Iraq did not make any sense to them. Rather than really look into the matter, they believed the "sound bite" of a few seconds that said the war was over. The reality is that guerilla warfare could continue in Iraq for years, and our troops are still at serious risk, and yet this did not come out fully until a few weeks ago, when more American soldiers were killed, and Americans demanded to know why.
