Steinbeck creates an image of George and Lennie from the very start of the novel, presenting them as characters, and the relationship between them in a variety of ways.

On of these ways is their appearance, when first described they are both shown wearing denim, with `tight blanket rolls' slung over their shoulders. This tells us a lot about the characters' lives. During the depression, denim was a fabric that only workers wore, showing us their working class status from the very start. Not only that, but we are also told about the blanket rolls over their shoulders which come to show that they are migrant ...

This produces a first impression that George is in charge, impression which is accentuated by when George stops in the clearing and Lennie almost crashes into him, but avoids it obediently stopping too.

From Lennie we can see that he's an impulsive character, judging by how he `flung down and drank' from the green water in the lake `snorting like a horse'. Comparisons to animals are not uncommon with Lennie. His way of walking is compared to that of a bear dragging it's paws. His hand is also called a paw when he dips it in the water making circles in the surface (which he then tries to impress George with exclaiming `Look what I done.' Showing his childish, attention seeking personality). However, the most interesting Lennie-animal comparison in chapter one is that that describes him as `A terrier who doesn't want to bring the ball to it's master.'
