The Huaorani community is known for their preference to stay deep in the forests where contact with the outside world is minimal. This is based on their belief that the forest wards-off their would-be enemies and keeps witchcraft at bay. By staying isolated from outsiders, the Huaorani can engage in their primary subsistence mode which is hunting and gathering. Huaorani use spears and blow guns laced with a poison that incapacitates or paralyzes their target. The blow guns are used for animals like monkeys or birds which are high up in the trees and out of reach of hunters. Hunters will carry a hallowed out gourd on their chest which carries the poison. The hunter dips the dart into the gourd before loading it into the blow gun. The dart itself is made from a soft palm frond stem that has to be whittled. The tip is heated in a fire which hardens the tip and looks like a foot-long toothpick only sharper. The poison is made from shaving the bark of a special vine (Bradley A. L. 2010).

The Huaorani approach to subsistence is influenced by these hunting limitations. The Huaorani must not eat meat from either an eagle or a jaguar.
