Autism is a developmental disorder which can be more generally classified under the category of Autism Spectrum Disorders. Autism Spectrum Disorder not only includes individuals with autism, but also individuals with Asperger�s Syndrome and pervasive developmental disorder. These disorders are generally characterized by impairments in social interaction, communication, and participation in repetitive behaviors. These messages can be transmitted through speech, written word, facial expressions, gestures, music, art, etc. Language is instinctive in humans, however in the autism population people often lack both the expressive and receptive language they need to successfully communicate with their peers.
