This story is the account of a savage and senseless murder of a family. When writing this book, the author, Truman Capote, separated crime reporting from serious literature. As he relives the 1959 murder of a Kansas farm family and the investigation that led to the capture, trial, and execution of the killers, Capote creates suspense. This non fiction novel has started a whole new type of writing. It has been called literary journalism and creative non fiction.

wanted his help to get a pardon. Capote felt torn by his affections for the two and by knowing of the murders they had committed.
Capote did not begin the book with the murder scene. Instead, he gave the reader a view of the Clutters as people, not just as victims. There is a chance for the reader to get to know and like the Clutters before they are murdered. And he could have given the description of the murders at the point they appeared, but he waited to give those details until Perry's confession. This creates suspense, and the reader is eager to find out what exactly did happen on November 14, 1959. He shows how other people's lives are affected by the murders. In the story, he gives us “false clues” like in a mystery. He also uses symbolism, like when he describes the murderers Dick’s and Perry’s faces as “twisted.”
