He started his career in 1980's in Italy, it was period when art movement Arte Poverawas already superseded by the Transavanguardia movement. But influence from Arte Povera on Cattelan's works is strong and dominative. The closest artist to Maurizio is Gino de Dominics. On my opinion his works are more negative and when you look at them you want to turn away. He worked on the verge of absurd, while Cattelan works are never causeless.
