Jack Roosevelt “Jackie” Robinson became the first black Major League Baseball player in the modern history of America’s pastime when he made his debut for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. By doing so, Robinson was a key aspect in bringing an end to racial segregation in professional baseball. Without this gigantic stride, many legendary baseball players such as, Willie Mays and Hank Aaron may have never been given the chance to become what they are today. Robinson dealt with racism throughout his Hall of Fame career and overcoming this battle he soon became an advocate for racial equality in sports later in life. Robinson succeeded in many sports, including football, were he was the quarterback for his state champion team. Robinson was recruited by the University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA) where he ended up becoming UCLA’s first four-letter man, which means he participated in four sports for his whole career. During 1941, Robinson decided to drop out of his final semester at UCLA and take a job with the federal government’s National Youth Administration. Only a few months later, after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Robinson was drafted into the U.S. Army. Shortly after the war, Robinson started playing baseball again which was just the beginning of an exceptional baseball career. Over the ten seasons Robinson played with the Brooklyn Dodgers, he played in six World Series including the 1955 season in which they won the World Championship.
