A Bildungsroman essay is a novel that traces a character’s development from childhood to adulthood. Jane Eyre is clearly an example of Bildungsroman. The narrative begins with Jane Eyre as a juvenile orphan being brought up by her ruthless aunt. Then ends as her quest to be loved is reached and she marries her true love.
In the beginning Jane Eyre is introduced as a young girl who possesses a sense of self-respect, pride, and a strong trust in the word of God, living with her pitiless aunt, Mrs. Reed. Lowood was not tranquil, for she did not quite fit in. She was not used to eating the food the school made and the long hours she was schooled. The school’s headmaster, Mr. Brocklehurst, is a malicious and abusive man. Mrs. Reed had spoke to Mr. Brocklehurst beforehand and portrayed Jane as a hypocritical liar, and he promised to publicize the information. Jane befriends a young girl named Helen Burns who obtains a strong martyr like attitude towards the school’s methods and later dies from a substantial typhus. This typhus leads to the departure of Mr. Brocklehurst. The rest of the 8 years Jane had at Lowood (six a student, two a teacher) were flourishing as she leaned numerous life skills.
After two years of teaching at Lowood, Jane decides its time for her to move on to and start a new chapter in her life. She advertises as a governess and in a weeks time gets a reply from a Mrs. Fairfax (the main housekeeper of the manor). Soon Jane packs up the few items she owns and ...
