Japanese Aristocrat


If I had to choose between the Nara and Heian period to live as an aristocrat, I would choose the Nara. When first looked at the Heian period may look more elaborate and culturally advanced, and in some ways it was. I believe however, the Nara period was much more exciting and fulfilling than the somewhat hollow Heian period. The Nara period was marked by new philosophies of religion, government, and culture.

Japans government was modeled after China's it had some very distinct differences. The Japanese seemed to modify Chinese concepts and make them unique to Japan. They did not only do this with government, but with all things taken from China. Japan was undergoing a great period of development. Aristocrats at this time were shaping an entire nation. It would have been extremely interesting and fulfilling to be one.
The Heian period aristocrats surrounded them selves with wealth and beauty. The court rules of etiquette were strict. Not adhering to etiquette meant being outcast from society. The aristocratic society completely cut them selves off from the commoners and lived in their own little world.
