The first person to call Jesus’ words was Augustine in Matthew chapters 5-7 the sermon of the mount. The sermon of the mount is widely known because of its compact expression of the law. Matthew’s Sermon on the Mount was edited work collected on several different occasions from Jesus’ word.

The issue is that no one knows the true meaning of the law’s until Jesus. This culture seemed to be split into two sides. One side was those who followed man laws and those who followed Jesus’ Law. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus states, “You have heard that it was said . . . but I tell you. . . .” This basically means that in comparison to those who were spreading the word like Moses Jesus’ Laws are more important and his authority is over Moses and greater than that of the scribes.

According to Matthew 5:17, Jesus did not come to destroy the law he came to fulfill it. In other words, he came to give meaning to the laws and what they mean.
