John Muir


was born April 21,1838 in Dunbar, Scotland. His father owned a store. They lived upstairs over the store. John had two sisters and one brother named David. John's grandfather lived near by.
As a boy John liked to take walks with his grandfather through the country. John liked to climb and explore also. He and his brother would climb the walls of the one thousand year old Dunbar Castle and play at the seashore near their home. In school John read about the birds and forests of America. He wanted to see the American wilderness. John's father wanted to go to America and so he moved his family to Wisconsin. John loved it there. He spent much of his time exploring the land and animals ...

While visiting friends in Oakland, California, he met Louise Wanda Strentzel. They married in the spring of 1880. John became a grape and pear farmer. They had two daughters and named Wanda and Helen. As soon as they were old enough John taught them John taught them about plants and animals.
John's farm did well and he was able to continue travelling around the country. As he traveled he saw how man was hurting the animals, land, mountains and forests. Men were cutting down to many trees and herds were eating all the grass. John said,"everything is hitched together." He knew if man hurt the earth that the earth would eventually hurt man.
