The Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke are referred to as the synoptic chapters because they look so much alike. One of the first differences you will notice between the synoptics is that Mark is much shorter than the other two. You will also notice that Matthew appears to be written for Jews, since he commonly refers to things happening to fulfill the Old Testament. So what we believe about Mark is that someone wrote this gospel to show the Romans (especially soldiers) that Jesus was a man of action, someone the Romans could admire and look up to. known of John prior to his public ministry, except that his birth was miraculously foretold (Luke 1:13-20). John achieved recognition as a prophet in the region of the lower Jordan Valley, where he attracted disciples. His public ministry began with the proclamation of a baptism of repentance in preparation for the Messiah. Crowds came to be baptized among them his cousin Jesus of Nazareth, whom John recognized as the Messiah.
So the baptism account which is three verses in Mark (1:9-11) and two similar verses in Luke (2:21-22), is five verses in Matthew (3:13-17). It is there that we hear tells Jesus that he is unworthy to baptize him. But Jesus' reply is that this is necessary to "fulfill all righteousness." The Contemporary English Version translates that this way -- "For now this is how it should be, because we must do all that God wants us to do."
