The Weakening of a Family

In Mark Mathabane's autobiography, Kaffir Boy, Johannes (Mark) has a tough relationship with his father that even goes on to affect how he treats the family.

Johannes actually tried to love his father, but his father just rejected it. He did not want to be bothered. Johannes's mother goes on to say that he is never happy because his job gives him worries, but Johannes questions this. He asks his mother if she has worries and after she admits that she does, he wonders why she is never unhappy. This shows that it is not only Johannes's father's job that worries him, but also potentially that Johannes was not following in the "tribal" path he did. Johannes also says some days he wished his father were dead and a better father would take his place. This sums up the relationship between him and his father. Basically he wishes that kind of relationship did not even exist, because having a better father would mean a better relationship. Eventually Johannes gives up trying to love and even understand his father which worsens their relationship even more.
