Does Kafka appear to be expressing his inner turmoil through the character Joseph K? Is he in effect writing about himself?
The Trial by Franz Kafka is considered by some to be one of the most brilliant and intriguing works in modern literature. However it is so vague that many interpretations of its meaning are possible and much has been written on the subject. being different. Joseph K is unsure of the correct action to be taken when he is first arrested and is influenced by those around him. Even though initially he does not see the need for an advocate, he allows himself to be persuaded by his uncle to engage one. No matter what he does to try and prove his innocence it seems to be a forgone conclusion the he will be found guilty. This is also true about his relationship with his father. The accusing court represents his inability to be what his father demands. The power of the court and the growing control it exerts over Joseph K as the novel progresses are an abstraction of the control Kafka's own father exerts over him for most of his life.
Joseph K's ambivalence in dealing with other father figures in the novel such as his uncle, and the lawyer, Huld, is also a reference to Kafka's resentment of his father. K. apatheticaly accepts the advice of his uncle to obtain counsel and suggests he return to the country at the first ...
