Kant's Ideas of Freedom and Morality

Immanuel Kant believed that ethics stemmed from rules and reason, just as did the laws of gravity. In Kant's opinion, ethics are universal and applied no matter what. He believed that the capacity to reason was unique to man and when exercised this was what it meant to be a moral human being. These ideas are valid because of the strong connection between morality and freedom seen in both Kant's time and in today's society.

Freedom, according to Kant, is an ideal conception and exists in itself It "can in no wise be shown according to laws of nature, and consequently not in any possible experience". Still, Kant held that freedom is "a necessary hypothesis of reason in a being that believes itself conscious of a will".

Morality, according to Kant, cannot be regarded as a set of rules that prescribe the means necessary to the achievement of a given end. Instead, its rules must be obeyed without consideration of the consequences that will follow from obeying them or not.

Kant presents a strong connection between morality and freedom. Freedom is basically following one's rational principles rather than simply being led by desires. Freedom is following one's own legislation and acting on universal laws. Therefore, freedom is morality.
