Katniss Everdeen is a teenage girl who lives in District 12, which is a coal-mining region in the country of Panem. She's a volunteer tribute in Panem's annual Hunger Games, during which she takes the place of her younger sister. Difficult times cause people to change and Katniss changed very much during her struggle.

In the beginning Katniss is the provider because she is having to take care of her family and many others. Her father was involved in a mining accident that left Katniss's mother in pieces. Since she is focused on very much day to day survival, she ends up being a hardened character. She thinks in a way that is very practical. She shows this when she talks about the cat, Buttercup. She just sees the cat as another mouth to feed. Another example would be when she is talking to Gale about the future and she says she never want's to have children because she can't imagine having her kids grow up in pain, sorrow and poverty.

Katniss develops into a celebrity when she has to learn how to be likable in front of crowds so she will be able to earn sponsors. She is forced to learn the importance of her image in public. With the help of Cinna, she becomes incredibly popular because of her fancy outfits.
