The Gilded Age is a time period before the second Industrial Ages in the United States. The period was known as “gilded” because the United States had an appearance of wealth while under this glossed image, the majority of Americans lived in poverty and the political structure was overrun by corruption. This appearance of wealth led to a large increase in the immigrant population at the same time that additional natural resources were discovered in the United States. Because the Industries were not regulated, businesses were able to employ workers for little pay and require long hours. In response to Labor Union, many businesses decided to fight back. They made it very difficult to join a union or have successful strikes.
