Latin America is a region of the Americas that consists of the South American continent, Mexico, and the islands of the Caribbean. Latin America has an area of almost 3.9% of the Earth’s surface or 14.1% of its land surface area. In 2010, Latin America had an estimated population of more than 590 million people.
Occupation of Latin America dates back to about 14,000 years ago. Aztecs, Toltecs, Caribs, Tupi, Maya, and Inca groups made Latin America their home. European groups began to make their way to Latin America after Christopher Columbus’ voyages.

The religion observed by the majority of Latin Americans is Christianity. Most are Roman Catholics. About 71% of the population is considered to be Catholic. However, membership in Protestant denominations is on the rise.
Education does not hold much emphasis among much of Latin America. There are an estimated 23 million children throughout the entire Latin American region between the ages of 4 and 17 that are not in the formal education system. This high estimate may be largely in part because of the poverty level of certain regions, as well as, the remote locations of some children.
