The term Renaissance man was used to describe this great man, Leonardo Da Vinci. He was the man of so many accomplishments in so many areas of human endeavor that his like has rarely been in human history. Casual patrons of the arts know him as the painter of the “Mona Lisa” and the great “Last Supper”, painted on the wall of the dining hall in the monastery of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, Italy. These paintings alone would have assured him enduring fame as an artist, but they should not obscure the fact that he was also a sculptor, an architect, and the man of science.

When he was fifteen his father apprenticed him to the artist Andrea del Verrocchio in Florence. Under Verricchio he studied painting, sculpting, and the mechanical arts.
