Unfortunately, ordinary citizens that own exotic pets rarely understand the dangers they impose on themselves, their community, and the wild animal itself. it. Many people believe that an animal born and raised in captivity does not miss the wild because the animal has never experienced it. The reasons are endless for those citizens who believe they have the right to own a wild animal.

With a desire for the exotic, danger is imminent. By their very nature, these animals are wild and highly dangerous, and do not adjust well to a captive environment. Even when the owners are able to supply adequate shelter and food, these exotic creatures pose a threat to the community if they escape, and if they escape, as they often do, their natural instincts take over. They are prone to attacking anything, or anyone they perceive as a threat. For example, Wayne Pacelle, Director of Governmental Affairs for the Humane Society stated: "Each wild animal kept as a pet in a community is a time bomb waiting to go off." (Vanden, 2002) Owners may convince themselves they can raise the animal as they would a cat or dog, but they are ...
