In the time of slavery based on race, there were people who accepted slavery and people who believed slavery was inhumane. Mary is “tied … up” against her will and is given “a hundred lashes” by her master, almost to the point where her master could “faint” from exhaustion (Pringle 16-17). The descriptions of this experience make it hard for the reader to read without a wave of sorrow for Mary, and it is difficult to read what happens next during Mary’s physical beating. Whether already a slavery abolitionist or a slavery apologist, Pringle presents the brutal details of Mary’s physical abuse experience to spark emotions within the reader to reevaluate their views on slavery. This narration that Mary provides for the reader allows the reader to imagine if they were in her position, and how hopeless they would feel as a result of being “beat … again and again” (Pringle 17).
