Literary Devices In Homer’s Odyssey



In Homer’s Odyssey many literary devices are used which make the epic more interesting to the reader. First, Homer begins the story with a frame story in which Zeus and Athena are discussing the story of Agamemnon. This story foreshadows what will happen to Odysseus if he returns home blindly. The second literary device used is Odysseus’ character, which is important to the story because it adds to the suspense of Odysseus’ leadership abilities. The reader does not know if Odysseus is going to lead his crew into something dangerous and what will happen because of his choices. and his wife takes a lover, Aegisthus. She is disloyal toward Agamemnon and when he returns back home he is expecting his wife to still be loyal to him and that he will still be King. However, since he returns home blindly and openly, his wife and Aegisthus kill him. Orestes, Agamemnon’s son is told that he must seek revenge for his father and he kills Aegisthus. This foreshadows what may happen to Odysseus because Odysseus has been away from Ithaca for many years because of the war and then because of his banishment to sea by Poseidon. Athena retells this story because she wants Telemachus, Odysseus’ son, to seek revenge for his father just like Orestes did. If Odysseus returns home blindly he may end up like Agamemnon so Telemachus is sent by Athena to warn him.
