The Devil and Tom Walker

Tom Walker is a man who loves and cherishes money more so than his wife. One day, he ends up talking a walk in a swamp and starts a conversation with the Devil, who in the story is referred to as “Old Scratch.” The devil ends up striking a deal with Tom Walker. Old Scratch offers Tome, the riches hidden in the Swamp in exchange of Tom’s soul.

Satire is a literary device used throughout the story, making fun of American morals.

In every stanza of the poem, Poe uses the same rhyme scheme, ABCBBB. Poe also uses internal rhyme where two words in the third rhyme will rhyme with each other and with another word in the fourth line.

The tone of “The Raven” is a dark and depressing poem, as the narrator expresses his feeling’s about losing this lover, Lenore.

The irony of the story is how the narrator cries about never being able to see his Lenore, but he’s going haunted with the memory of her, which is sort of like being with her.


Thanatopsis

‘Thanatopsis’ written by William Cullen Bryant is a poem describing the ability of nature to make us, humans, feel better.

The poem talks about a person becoming one with nature when they die. When a person dies, they become untied with nature; not being completely alone - So dying is nothing to be afraid of.

The meter used in Thanatopsis is iambic pentameter. The poetic structure of Thanatopsis is blank verse.
