In the novel Lord of Flies, the author, William Golding feels that when people are left to their own devices, the vast majority will choose irrational evil over reason and order. Irrational evil is something that causes misfortune, suffering, or difficulty. These acts are illogical and done in moments of chaos while reason and order represent doing the things that make sense and are deemed to be the right things by society. People will choose irrationalisms and evil because these involve no work on the person's part. the book, " By the time Ralph finished blowing the conch the platform was crowded." (p.32). This shows that in the beginning of the story the children were very obedient to following the rules. As the story progress, though, Ralph becomes aggravated. He states, "Things are breaking up. I don't understand why. We began well. We were all happy." (p.82). He is also annoyed with the amount of work the others are not doing. He says, "I bet if I blew the conch this minute they would come running. Then we would be very solemn and someone would say we ought to build a jet, submarine, or TV set. When the meeting was over they'd work for five minutes, then wonder off or go hunting." (p.51). This shows that people would rather wonder around unorganized and having fun than doing what is important. The final example of this is when Jack asks, "Who will join my tribe and have fun?" (p.150).
