Lord of the Flies: Good vs. Evil

People are surrounded by good and evil every day. Superheros and villains, police and criminals, and even bullies and victims are prime examples of the presence of good and evil. Good and evil is one of the main themes in Lord of the Flies. Golding uses characters to represent good and evil. He shows that the longer people go without the presence of good, evil will take over, but humans are naturally good.

Golding uses the characters to show that if humans do not have the influence of good, they resort to evil. In the beginning of the novel, the boys still carry around the positive influence of civilization. With this influence Jack agrees with having a democracy, but as their connection to reality fades he stops following rules and leaves the democracy to hunt. Roger is also and example of this. There is a scene in the book where he is throwing rocks at a littleun but doesn't hit him because of the influence of good: “Yet there was a space round Henry, perhaps six yards in diameter, into which he dare not throw. Here, invisible yet strong, was the taboo of the old life.” (Golding 56). However, at the end of the book after being separated from civilization he kills Piggy with a rock.
