Lord of the Flies: Symbols

In William Golding’s award winning novel, Lord of the Flies, several ideas were shown to be important through the use of symbols. Some examples are fire symbolising civilisation and glasses symbolising blindness and sight.

An important symbol in the novel, Lord of the Flies, is fire. Fire is important in the novel because the author uses it to emphasise the idea of civilisation in the book. In order to be rescued from the deserted island the boys have to have a signal fire going so that people passing by in ships can see the fire and come to the rescue. Because of this, he was considered an outsider and was not taken serious by the boys. “...Piggy’s glasses flashed.” Several times in novel this quote is repeated. This shows us that as the boys become more savage throughout the story Piggy’s glasses, as the “flash”, give Piggy a more advanced and deeper and intelligent vision.
