Ludwig van Beethoven

Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Germany in 1770. He died in 1827 at the age of 56. He grew up during the classical age, which was the new style that had western ideas about arts and music. This period of time was from 1750 - 1830. This is why his music is called "classical".

Beethoven was born in Bonn, Germany. There is not an actual date of his birth. His baptism certificate shows December 17, 1770. My research shows that the kids were usually baptized the day after their birth. So it's estimated that he was born on the 16th. He was one of seven children, but only two other brothers survived.

knew that at a young age Mozart was very talented. His father wanted him to be successful, too. Beethoven's father made him practice for hours at a time. His dream was to have his son make the family rich. After long nights of drinking, Beethoven's father would sometimes drag his son out of bed to practice the piano or play for guests. He have his first performance when he was just seven years old.

Beethoven found a new teacher when he got a little older. He was becoming a fine pianist and would often improvise, or make up, the music as he played it. As a teenager Beethoven traveled to Vienna, Austria and got to play for Mozart. Mozart was very impressed with the young teen's talent. He told people to keep and eye on this young man. While in Vienna Beethoven gave piano lessons and was becoming a popular. The French Revolution of 1789 was going on at the time and many people were dying in war.

He also liked Italian, French, Slavic, and even Celtic which is found in Ireland.

In 1792 he was able to go and study with an "Old Master". This meant someone who was very well known and who was very talented at teaching and playing music.

Beethoven at first did not want to become a composer. He very much liked playing instruments in concert. However the first composition he sold made him very wealthy and he no longer had to worry about money.
