Macbeth's Downfall

In Shakespeare’s grim play ‘Macbeth’ the protagonist after whom the play obtains its namesake is ultimately to blame for his downfall. There were, however, many strong influences that play their part in corrupting the once ‘valiant’ and ‘brave’ Macbeth into the ‘tyrant’ he ultimately becomes; even though it is his own ‘vaulting ambition’ which seals his fate. Macbeth’s moral integrity is overlooked by his thirst for power. This thirst allows him to be manipulated by his wife, Lady Macbeth, as she ‘pours [her] spirits in [Macbeth’s] ear’ and drives him to regicide as well as several other murders. part in the Murder of King Duncan. It is a particularly crucial moment in which she declares Macbeth is ‘too full o’the milk of human kindness’ to commit regicide. She knows then that she must devote herself to this evil business if her and her husband’s aspirations are to be achieved as he cannot do so by himself. Devote herself she does, declaring to Macbeth she would have ‘dashed the brains out’ of her own child before she break her promise to Macbeth to support him. Although it does appear that she is to blame for turning her husband into the ‘serpent’ who commits regicide, it is his choice to further the carnage. It is clear as Macbeth’s grip on sanity loosens that his actions of murder unsettle his wife, shown when she states ‘our desire is got without content’. She has lost her control of this tyrant as his paranoia consumes him and Lady Macbeth is no longer to blame.
